naschmarkt, wien

When I woke up today I had more than 300 unread items in my google reader. I went to bed with about 50 unread items which, I guess, is quite a lot already, but I was too overwhelmed even then to go through all of it after spending 30-60 minutes catching up with it a couple of times that day already.

I will admit that I am a lazy blog reader. If I see a blog I like, I will click ‘subscribe’ and read up on the older posts that (usually) show up in the reader. If the feed is set to only show part of the content, though, I will more often than not unsubscribe immediately. It’s very rare that I find blogs where I want to spend the extra time it takes to click and load the actual website, and even when I do, I don’t click every time, but rather once a month just to get an overview. The Cherry Blossom Girl is one of those rarities.

I subscribe to more than 300 blogs at the moment, but I feel like I should do some cleaning up. A lot of the time I subscribe to feeds because I feel I should stay updated in certain areas (fashion, gadgets, design), and not because I want to read every single update from the blog and this clogs up my reader much more than it should. So I have decided to spend the rest of the day cutting them out and focusing on the blogs that I actually want to read*. The ones that are truly inspiring to me and not just because they are popular trendsetters in that area (some fashion blogs for example).

Today I have actually spent four hours reading blogs including watching embedded videos and reading related and linked articles. I think that is a lot of time! It is fine when I am sick and staying at home, but what about when I have to get back to work? When I don’t have as much time on the computer? Hm.

There are a couple of annoying blog-related things about being in China, as well. Some sites are blocked, which means I need to connect to a proxy server to be able to read them. And sometimes this is not a problem (if I am already connected), but I don’t always want to do it because it takes time and makes the slow connection even slower, so wordpress hosted blogs and Nubby Twiglet are some that I am keeping in my reader, even if I can’t see all the content at the moment.

* When I say “read”, mostly I mean “look at”. Pretty much all the blogs I read have 50% visual content or more. There are very few exceptions (and even some of these have occasional photos) other than news blogs. My interests are usually purely visual which, I guess, is also why I post so many photos and rarely write anything of substance. And also why I put some old black and white holga photo of Vienna and one from Mödling (outside Vienna), even if they have nothing to do with this at all. Sorry for all the text, I don’t know why I felt the need to write this and if you read this far I applaud you! Staying in is making me crazy.

Seeing these photos again makes me miss Vienna, too. I think I will go back this year and spend some quality time with my sister and her family.

Flattr this!
