I stayed on a farm about 20km north of Akureyri right by the water, with great mountain views. On my second night, chances of northern lights were moderate according to the Aurora forecast – lucky for me, they turned up around 10pm. It was magical and moved me in a way that I cannot explain. It was a dream come true.
On my first day I spent ten hours driving north to a farm outside Akureyri. It doesn’t actually take that long to drive up there, but in Iceland it’s easy to get carried away. Everywhere you look is crazy beautiful, and with hardly anyone else on the road in October you can stop and enjoy the views every five minutes. I was lucky to have some beautiful weather for most of my trip.
